Hani Abdile with Clayton Thomas

...and joining us from the United States, the sonically extraordinary vocalist, composer and instrument builder Christina Wheeler.

Who are these people?

Christina Wheeler

Vocalist, electronic musician and composer Christina Wheelerʼs musical explorations have included forays in techno, house, 2-step, drum and bass, breakbeat, soul, dance hall, dub, world
music, ambient, free jazz and improvisational forms. In her live solo electronic performances, she blends an organic, fluid amalgam of improvised electronic music from a variety of sound sources, including processed vocals and vocal loops, hand-triggered sampler playing, live processing and theremin.

Hani Abdile

Hani Abdile was 17 when she arrived in Australia on a people smuggler’s boat. She fled Somalia, an African nation torn apart by civil war, when her life was threatened after she refused to marry an old man.

Hani left behind her mother, father and 13 brothers and sisters. She travelled through Kenya, Malaysia and Indonesia before she boarded a dangerous boat. It sank in Australian waters.

That was almost three years ago. Hani has since released a remarkable book of poetry 'I will rise'. We are honored to have her join us to read her poetry.

Melanie Eden

is a Sydney based improviser, post-opera singer and all-round good human. She has just returned from 6 months in South Korea studying Pansori singing, and consequently developing a totally unique take on the vocal tradition.

Entry is just $10, with 20% of all proceeds going to the Asylum Seekers Centre in Newtown.

Doors at 6:30. See you there.
