JAZZGROOVE

The Dilworths (9:30pm)

Eamon Dilworth (trumpet) / Dave Jackson (saxophone) / Steve Barry (piano) / Tom Botting (double bass) / Paul Derricott (drums)

The Dilworths is a collaborative project between five of Sydney’s finest improviser/composers. Inspired by contemporary artists from Miles Davis through to Ambrose Akinmusire the compositions explore strong melodic devices that are turned, twisted and developed through improvisation into powerful, emotionally charged and often high energy performances. This performance marks the end of their Trans-Tasman tour after performances in Auckland, Wellington and Melbourne.

“If you like your modern jazz creative, swinging and with attitude, check out the DILWORTHS impressive debut CD. Wonderfully mature playing and exceptional compositions, this is an outstandingly talented group of young musicians who are already making waves and who we’re going to be hearing a lot more from in the future.” - Mike Nock, 2009

“The talent-packed Dilworths are a band to watch out for; their appealing compositions and articulate performances cannot be ignored” - John McBeath (Weekend Australian 2010)

Lines of Flight (8pm)

Joe Cummins (trumpet) / Casey Golden (piano) / Alex Slater (drums) / Sam Pettigrew (bass)

Their first gig of 2013, Lines of Flight are returning from the glorious wilderness better players, with new ideas, playing some new songs. The band aim to present simple compositions played with care and passion. We like to talk about our music being 'heavy', 'hardcore', and 'intense', but in reality you can expect Lines of Flight to play songs that are often hypnotic, quite, lyrical, and emotional.

Sam and Joe once saw Oren Ambarchi perform. It sounded, and felt, like sitting just behind a jet engine. Lines of Flight are working on creating their own savage sound machine. We're not sure exactly what it is yet, but it's engine purrs with the fumey flames of Alasnoaxis, Radiohead, Holy Other, and the many wonderful musicians on the Sydney scene.

"A screaming comes across the sky." Thomas Pynchon.
