Trumpeter Ellen Kirkwood formed her band Captain Kirkwood when she received the Jann Rutherford Memorial Award, early in 2012. A prolific composer, Kirkwood was keen to use the opportunity of the award to write an extended work. Inspired by Jeff Wayne's narrated adaptation of 'War of the Worlds', Kirkwood decided to re-write the Greek myth 'Theseus and the Minotaur' as a 40 minute suite of composed and improvised music with narration. Drawing from some of Sydney's most innovative and creative musicians, Kirkwood has brought together a band that brings 'Theseus' to life with a unique, cheeky energy.
“Ellen Kirkwood’s 'Theseus', already highly attractive as a recording, is especially appropriate for live performances, its programmatic vehicle supplying a value-added cultural and dramatic experience to music that is never less than expressive, evocative and joyous.” - David Sampson
Captain Kirkwood will be launching their new album, featuring the suite and more of Ellen's originals, at this Jazzgroove performance.riana Cowlishaw (vox and crazy effects) / Gavin Ahearn (keys - funky crazy sounds) / Peter Koopman (guitar) / Alex Hewitson (elc bass) / Nic Cecire (drums)
