Double Tap

Double Tap fuses online tropes and robotic interactions with nostalgic objects, and in doing so critiques the evolution of the Pix or It didn’t happen nature of contemporary culture. By creating works that integrate complex technologies or online‐speak with gestures of physicality, Julia’s work examines the subtle traces that a steady stream of constantly evolving technology is leaving on the human psyche.

The interdisciplinary exhibition traverses installation, painting, and animation, and all pieces are deeply rooted in the aesthetics and etymology of online interaction. Many of the works are interactive, with a focus on reestablishing physical connection between people, places, and things within an increasingly screen‐based culture.

Julia Gutman is a Sydney‐based interdisciplinary artist, with an interest in digital culture and online social behaviours. She recently returned from 72U, a creative residency in Los Angeles designed to open people up to new ways of thinking, collaborating, and tackling modern communication problems.

Julia is well known for her Instagram alias @lifeofslothh and for wandering the streets of Redfern sporting a cacophony of clashing patterns. She is currently completing her Undergraduate degree at UNSW Art and Design.
