'Shimmer' is a unique audio-visual and storytelling photography project showcasing LGBTQIA+ elder's lives. It is an invitation to imagine how we can shape our own futures.

‘Shimmer’ is a innovative audio and visual photography exhibition of Australian LGBTQIA+ stories. It amplifies the courageous, contemporary and unapologetic voices of elders and seniors in NSW. By using photography to create portraits and pairing these images with recordings of participants personal stories, the exhibition celebrates strength, hardship, love, resilience, and pride. First Nations stories mix with those from transgender refugees, people with disabilities or women living in the bush in this new body of work. Robert Knapman brings 15 years of photographing Australian Queer communities, and many more years of working with marginalised Australians in NSW and SA.

For the duration of the exhibition, a beautifully curated soundscape of participant’s stories will create an immersive exhibition cocoon to reflect on where we are today and who we might become. The exhibition and soundscape offer a fresh look at our unwavering LGBTQIA+ communities through the eyes of our elders. QR Codes linked to images will also offer deeper insight into the lives and experiences of those in each images.

The project and exhibition launch will include a panel made up of project participants who will share their story, their experience of being a part of ‘Shimmer’, and the potential for the arts to uplift community.
