Meaningful Movies Presents: Daughter of the Lake

WHEN: 7pm – 31 Jan 2017

COST: Donation

Join Amnesty International and The Meaningful Movies team for a screening of The Daughter of The Lake, directed by Ernesto Cabellos Damian.

The documentary follows Nelida, an Andean woman able to communicate with water spirits, when, during the height of the Peruvian gold rush, she decides to use her powers to prevent a mining corporation from destroying the body of water she considers to be her mother. With a gold deposit valued at billions of dollars lying just beneath Nelida’s lakes, the local farmers and Latin America’s biggest gold producer are soon led into conflict.

Daughter of the Lake avoids easy answers and leaves the audience feeling the gravity of the situation in which communities such as Nélida’s find themselves. The film asks audiences to weigh the personal, commercial, industrial, and ecological values of water with the ethical and spiritual elements that have run throughout history.” – Patrick Mullen, Point of View Magazine

The screening is being held to help raise awareness of indigenous rights in South America, drawing particular attention to north Peruvian farmer Máxima Acuña's ongoing battle with global gold and copper giant Yanacocha. In the course of this battle, Máxima has been attacked and harassed by company security and the local police in an effort to intimidate her into leaving her land, with Máxima and her family even being brutally beaten.

Amnesty International is gathering support around the globe to put pressure on the Peruvian government to protect Máxima and her family and uphold their rights.
