Sounds of Space

TYPE: EXHIBITION, SCREENING

SPACE: GALLERY

WHEN: 17 Aug 2017 – 27 Aug 2017

COST: FREE

Sounds of Space is a free inclusive community event happening at 107 Redfern from 17-27 August 2017 that merges the arts and sciences with two exhibition spaces; a large scale projection room showcasing the best in astrophotography and incredible recordings from Space, and a curated group show of mixed media works from an exciting collection of Australian artists.

The projection room will feature a rotating program of audio/video works. The first will be a traditional look at the actual audio recordings from Space alongside corresponding imagery. The second will be a look into composers interpretations of the stars and planets above us, think - Gustav Holst's breathtaking suite The Planets and much more.

This unique event is geared towards inclusive community engagement with an aim to spark joy and discovery for the younger members of our community who may not have engaged with the incredible Universe above us, and a chance for us all to rediscover the sense of awe that lies in the boundless Space surrounding us.

Special programs and artists will be announced so stay tuned for more details and keep your eyes on the Stars.

As this is an accessible, family friendly, all ages event the venue does have access for wheelchairs and prams. In the unlikely event the gallery space becomes too full for prams we ask for patience and understanding as prams may need to be left outside the projection room to create space for patrons and the event takes no responsibility for unsupervised personal belongings. This is of course very unlikely and visitors are welcome to email soundsofspace2017@gmail.com with any questions prior to visiting should you have them. Bringing babies and younger ones in a carrier may be helpful.

Please note that the projection room is quite dark and the visuals are very large to create an immersive feeling, as such, some younger visitors may find it a little overwhelming. However there is so much to see in the remaining gallery that we believe there is something for everyone in the family. For the duration of any free family craft workshops (soon to be advertised) we will increase the lighting levels in the projection space and lower the volume slightly to make it more child friendly as we want young ones to engage with the exhibition as much as anyone else.

This event is proudly sponsored by City of Sydney. Sounds of Space is run by a small team of volunteers and artists working to bring this free event to the community. Please email soundsofspace2017@gmail.com with any questions or comments and we will do our best to respond promptly.
