FERTILE DISORDER - Spirit Possession and its Provocation of the Modern - by Kalpana Ram -Book Launch

A stimulating book by Kalpana Ram, Assoc. Professor of Anthropology at Macquarie University.
Published by University of Hawaii Press.

In this book Ram uses spirit possession in south India to illuminate ordinary experiences and relationships. In doing so, she uncovers fundamental instabilities that continue to haunt modern formulations of gender, human agency, and political emancipation. Fertile Disorder is based on ethnographic material on rural Tamil women’s experiences of family planning, development, reform, and emancipation. It then fans out to explore modern assumptions that underlie these social improvement projects assumptions that directly shape people’s lives.

The book will be launched by Professor Dipesh Chakraborty (Lawrence A. Kimpton Distinguished Professor, Department of History and Dept. of South Asian Languages and Civilizations, University of Chicago).

On the night a small number of the book will be on sale at cost price, $60.
